In case you have been following the oil leak coverage (I cannot seem to get away from it given my job), here is a live feed monitoring the progress.
Live Stream of BP Oil Leak
According to BP, the cost of the response to date (May 24th) amounts to about $760 million, including the cost of the spill response, containment, relief well drilling, grants to the Gulf states, claims paid and federal costs. They also stated, "It is too early to quantify other potential costs and liabilities associated with the incident."
Another note of interest, BP made over $5 billion in the first quarter of 2010. Their total exposure to this incidence is estimated in the $3-$5 billion range, and if their bond rating does not fall, they will be basically unscathed. If their bond rating falls, however, their cost to borrow will sky rocket and things could get rocky very quickly. I heard a rumor that even Pappa’s seafood is now suing BP for lack of fish. You add up every seafood restaurant in the US and this deal could get pretty smelly : ) Sorry I couldn't help myself.
