Weekend at Windy Point

Thanks to our good friends Sarah and Michael, Chris and I enjoyed a beautiful weekend on Lake Travis. The weather was amazing, lots of sun and a refreshing breeze to keep us cool. It was my first trip to this lake, and it did not disappoint. I was convinced that there was a job nearby calling my name and a few houses in dire need of my occupancy. Oh, to live there! The drive back to Katy on Sunday was a harsh reality.

On a brighter note, I got to spend some great quality time with Dean Elliot too, an added plus to an otherwise amazing and adventurous weekend.

Unless you are familiar with the infamous Hippy Hollow at Lake Travis, you will only notice me posing with my mode of transportation for the weekend. After seeing this little hideaway on the lake, I was suddenly aware again why I have probably never spent much time in Austin. I guess you could say as a 3rd generation Aggie, there are some members of my family who are very aware of the weirdness in Austin. I would still move there, nonetheless.

And we couldn't leave without a nice lunch overlooking the lake at The Oasis. Unbelievable view!

A great weekend at Windy Point. I will now spend the next 10 years of my life trying to find a way to call it my home!

Altar'd

A quick post for my manic Monday. I keep forgetting to mention this site/blog that I came across when searching craigslist for a certain piece of furniture. Would love a highboy chest of drawers, similiar to the one below, except without the glass.

While searching I discovered a very talented woman in the Houston area that transforms outdated furniture. Some of her stuff will really fit some of your styles (you know who you are). I do not personally know her, haven't met her, or seen her work in person, but I am sure she won't mind free advertising from my blog. Happy browsing. The Altar'd Blog and The Altar'd Website

More Great Finds . . .

I am a sucker for cutesy chairs. I would love to own any of these. Of course not in white fabric, but there are many different fabrics from plain and simple to ornate and fabulous. Which one is your favorite?
I personally would go with the Bradford chair (the 3rd one down). It is chic, unique, and makes my knees weak. HA!

Part OF My Job

So most of you know that I work for Bud Adams' oil and gas company, Adams' Energy. The last two years have been anything but dull around the office. Between Bud and Vince Young's media frenzy, our phones are almost always ringing and the jokes around the office are abundant. The most recent event to hit the press was about Vince's run-in at a local Dallas stip club. I am not going to dive into the details of that night, but if you need to be caught up, here is a link to the story: Vince Young Fight

When this most recent news hit the stands there were several, well, let's say inappopriate jokes circulating at the office about Vince. I will leave it to your imagination what was being said. Then one of our customers, and loyal U.T. fan, sent me the following website today. Click on the picture to visit the official website. HILARIOUS!

That's right everyone. You can now buy your very own VINCE YOUNG brisket, BBQ, and sausage, sold at your local Walmart and Kroger. The jokes hit a whole new level of craziness once this made its way around the office.  The least riske one I can share with you:

Vince's new slogan: "If I can no longer play football in the NFL, at least I can share my sausage with everyone."

On that note, I knew there was a reason I was looking forward to the new HEB opening. I am tired of shopping at Kroger and Walmart, which both have horrible produce. I got use to HEB at our old house and cannot wait for the new one to open, which I just found out last night is scheduled to open August 4th. Yay!

Sorry everyone if this post left you feel a little uneasy, but this is something I deal with everyday as part of my job. You barely even got a taste of it- no pun intended.

Something To Be Proud OF- KISD

Although, I am not a teacher in Katy, I did grow up going to school in Katy and cannot help but be a little proud. Out of over 27,000+ schools in the U.S., 4 of the 5 high schools in Katy ISD were listed in Newsweek's Best High Schools of 2010, placing them in the top 6% of all American high schools. 127 of the 1,600 schools that made the list were from the state of Texas. Take a look at the list. The list shows where schools ranked based on 1.) Ratio of AP tests taken to graduating seniors, 2.) % of students eligible for low income school lunches 3.) Ratio of passed AP tests to total of all seniors.

The four KISD high schools ranked this year are Cinco Ranch High School at No. 478; Seven Lakes High School at No. 689; Taylor High School at No. 982; and Katy High School at No. 1387.

The highest ranked Houston public high school (excluding specialty Vanguard schools) listed at No. 151 is Robert E. Lee, followed by Memoral at No. 220 and Westside at No. 312.

Just a little brief, off-the-wall post for a manic Monday.

Without Further Ado

After 1 full year in our house (happy anniversary house), I have finally sat down and taken some time to put together some post-renovation pics. I know, I know, it's about time. Although we still have some finishing touches to complete and a few rooms upstairs to occupy, we are satisfied and comfortable with the way things turned out. Some of the pics are purely decorating transformations, and for some of them I do not have any before shots, so please use your imagination. And yes, I love to paint, if you cannot tell. The only rooms in the house with color when we moved in was our bathroom and just wait until you see that!

Kitchen- Before

The cabinets were in bad shape. Lots of wear, fading, and scratches. The countertops consisted of the same gray tile that you see on the back splash, and the sink was your standard scale basin with a very dated faucet. Oh, yes, and don't forget the ceiling box light with hanging make-shift pot rack. Good news here is that the tile was fairly new and laid at a diagonal, which actually complemented the flow of the kitchen and the stove was a recent purchase by the previous owner. We had the cabinets sanded, primed, and painted, and the island refinished to a darker mahogany color. We felt doing this to the entire kitchen would darken the room too much. Instead we went with a busy and exotic granite with undercabinet lighting and a light tumbled travertine backsplash. The old ceiling box was removed, new drywall and texture added in its place, and new pendant lights hung over the island. With a new stainless steel sink, bronze faucet, and new cabinet hardware the end result really came together. The original stove and microwave surprisingly work like new, so until we get sick of looking at them, they are here to stay.

Masterbath- Before

Okay, this bathroom was a nightmare. Sadly, I do not have a picture of the window leak. The wall with the window had to be gutted due to a leak coming in from the top of the window. We knew about this when we bought the house, no surprises there. In fact, it is partly how we got the seller to come down quite a bit on the price, that and he was already into another home and mortgage. At the end of the day, the leak really was not a big deal at all. The wall paint, cabinets, and shower were, however. I don't know who thought that green cabinets and "poop smear" wall paint looked good, and I don't know how long it took them to do that, but it took me much longer to fix it! Again, the tile in this room was fairly new. Beautiful tumbled travertine with a lot of character. First task was tearing out the shower, starting over from scratch, new hardware, tile, glass, shower pan, the whole 9 yards. We bought coordinating bath and sink faucets, replaced the outdated fan, yes there was a fan in the bathroom, and I spent several days repainting the cabinets. We bought new sinks, installed granite, and had the ginormous mirror taken down and cut for two individual mirrors. Oh yeah, and let's not forget the gold door knobs that were throughout the entire house. Yes, all 24 of them. We replaced them with bronze lever-style knobs.

Family Room- Before

New paint, lighting, window fixtures, and furniture. Oh yea, and the yellowed air vents on the ceiling were replaced as well throughout the house. All the small things that you just don't think about.

Still need to paint this room and find a rug, but at the moment
it is functioning adequately as my scrapbooking room.

This is Chris's old college furniture and bedspread.
Aww, I hope he is not sad one day when I replace it.

Upstairs Bath 1- Before

This bathroom had wallpaper throughout and a cowboy theme, with matching electric outlet and light switch plates. It was very interesting. We had the wallpaper removed, drywall floated, texture added, and painted the bathroom a light green color. I also painted the built-ins a sharp black color to accent.

This bathroom also had wallpaper throughout. Same task here. Had the wallpaper removed, drywall floated, texture added, and painted the bathroom a teal/blue color.

Gameroom- Now

This room was great as is. Carpet upstairs is only a few years old, so it is in great shape. I painted this room an "Elephant skin" color and accented with olive colored pillows and drapes. The room is most definitely still a work in progress, but at 22x20, it has a long way to go before it looks complete. The couch was a great Craigslist find, leather, seats 5-6 people and is in new condition.

Some friends have been asking for awhile now to see pictures of the progress on our house. We did a whole lot at once when we moved in, sort of hit a wall and took a little break, and now are slowly making changes again, so check back as we continue on this fun learning experience.

A Revamp

Chris and I spent most of the day on Sunday trying to revamp the garage floor. Really and truly it wasn't a necessity, but just another project that we could do together that would also benefit our somewhat dated house. We are still really enjoying these little projects around the house and since Chris's ultimate goal is to rebuild an older car, we are gradually working our way towards that. First, Chris emptied the contents out of the garage and rinsed it with an acid solution.

Final product

Sadly, the pictures don't do the project any justice. The floor actual turned out really great, and although I did not take a great before picture to compare with the final product, Chris and I can tell a huge difference. Now, how about that closet I keep putting off? It is in the works. Stay tuned for my closet makeover.
